Proposal

Submit a concise proposal by e-mail that describes your work and a short biography with your credentials.  We will not open unsolicited E-mail attachments, therefore, be sure that the body of your e-mail addresses whatever you may have attached.  Failure to do this may result in the deletion of your e-mail.

Please address in your proposal your target audience, the marketability of your work, and how it will compete against similar works.  We only accept manuscripts that are complete.  This includes having been proofread and polished.  Please also include the total page count.

The proposal plus biography should not exceed 500 words.

You must have an active E-mail address as this is how we will respond to you. You can expect to receive a reply regarding the acceptance or rejection of your proposal in 4-5 weeks.  If you have not heard from us in that period you may contact us regarding the status of your submission.  We may not comment on rejections, but we will notify you by E-mail regardless of our decision.  If we are interested in your manuscript or work, we will request that a hard copy be mailed to us.

Keep in mind that your proposal is the first thing we see from you.  It represents you and your work.  It should be polished and free of grammatical and spelling errors.  A poorly written proposal may result in a rejection.

If you are interested in editing an encyclopedia we will need c.v.'s for all the editors, an entry word list, 2-3 sample entries, how you will recruit contributors, and an anticipated time to completion.

Manuscript

If we ask for your manuscript we will do so by E-mail.  We will then expect a response from you regarding when we can expect the manuscript.  If we do not get a response we will assume you are no longer interested in pursuing publication with Diversion Press.  We will ask for you to send one copy (unless otherwise indicated) through regular mail.  All books will go through an in-house editorial review (typically by two of our editors).  If your book is an academic work it may go out for up to two additional peer reviews.  We require at least 4-6 months to respond to a manuscript once we receive it.  If it is an academic work it may take several months longer due to the peer review process.  Once we request a manuscript for review, we ask that you do not submit your proposal or manuscript elsewhere.  We spend a great deal of time reviewing and marking your manuscript.  We are a small press with limited resources and do not have the time to review works that the author is not ultimately considering publishing with us.

Here are things to keep in mind before sending us your manuscript:

  • As a new, small press, we simply can not offer advances on manuscripts.  We do pay author's royalties on sales and this will be outlined in the contract.
  • We DO NOT offer advance contracts.  We simply must have a complete work to review before making a decision.
  • We DO NOT take simultaneous submissions of manuscripts.  We spend a lot of time reading and reviewing manuscripts.  If it is under consideration elsewhere we would appreciate letting us know.
  • We do not want a rough draft, we want a completed, polished copy, which includes any photographs or illustrations (photocopies are okay at this point), and an index, notes, and bibliography (if appropriate).  A rough copy that appears to need an inordinate amount of copyediting will result in rejection.
  • Our request that you send your manuscript does not imply that we will publish your work.  It means that we are interested in potentially publishing your work.

Revisions

Most manuscripts need revisions.  Depending on the level of revisions needed we may ask you to revise your manuscript and resubmit it based on the reviews BEFORE we make an offer to publish it.  Or, we may accept your work pending revisions.  We expect revisions to be completed in a timely manner.  Also, please note that it is unfair for us to spend a great deal of time suggesting revisions only for you to take your work elsewhere.

Accepted/Rejected/Pending Revision

You will be notified by E-mail regarding the acceptance, rejection, or request for revisions, of your manuscript once the review process is complete. We may not comment on rejections, but likely will give you feedback on your work.

SHORT STORIES
Some things to consider before you submit to us:

We DO NOT accept previously published material for any of our anthologies.

We acquire first time world rights and re-print rights (only to re-print the same anthology as a paperback, hardback, or audiobook).  All other rights revert back to the author 12 months following publication as outlined on our release form.

Materials will not be returned.   All materials will be shredded and recycled.

Submission:

Hard copy via regular mail

Please send one double-spaced typed copy of your story with your name on each page and include page numbers.

With your story, please submit a cover letter with a short biography listing your credentials, stating to what anthology you are submitting, and including an active E-mail address.

Compensation:

Before you submit  please be aware that the compensation, unless otherwise noted, will include publication of the work (if accepted) and a brief author biography.  For all short story anthologies (excluding the poetry anthology), authors residing in the United States will receive one free copy of the work.  The author may also be able to purchase discounted copies of the work.

Acceptance or Rejection:

You can expect to receive a reply via E-mail regarding the acceptance or rejection of your manuscript once the review process is complete.
